Ukraine Performance In Euro cup 2012





Football in Ukraine is the number one sport. It takes its direct heritage from the Soviet football, particularly of 1970s and 1980s. The major football events in Ukraine are supervised by the Football Federation of Ukraine that was reorganized in 1991 in place of the Soviet Football Federation of Ukrainian created in 1920.




Ukraine national football team has representing own independent nation qualified for the FIFA World Cup once. That was in the 2006 tournament when they reached the quarter finals led by the former Soviet football star players. Ukrainian championship has primarily developed out of the Soviet competitions. In 1975 Ukraine extended its success into the UEFA Super Cup as well.




The Ukrainian football professional club competitions organized in the three tier league system. Parallel with them there is a knockout competition the Ukrainian Cup. There is also a Super Cup match up that is being conducted on annual basis among the top two best clubs in the country. Ukraine has also highly developed children and youth football. There is a national competition that is being conducted by the professional clubs of Ukraine and the best national sports schools. It is a two tier league with several regional divisions. Each club is represented by four squads with player’s age restrictions being from under 14 to fewer than 17. Parallel to that there is an independent Student League which encompasses teams of various universities and institutions of higher education. Selected players of that league successfully compete at student Olympics.


After an unsuccessful Euro 2004 qualification campaign, Ukraine went on to qualify for their first-ever FIFA World Cup on 3 September 2005, by drawing with Georgia, 1–1, in Tbilisi. Their first World Cup (2006 FIFA World Cup). After being crushed in the first match by Spain 0-4.Ukraine beat their other two opponents to reach the knock-out stage. In the round of 16.Ukraine played the winner of Switzerland, who they beat on penalties reaching the quarter final of the tournament before losing 3–0 to eventual champions Italy.
